Thanks for your comment. I h...Hello Counterpoise,

Thanks for your comment. I have no idea why Rick Hill's "part 2" article is not to be found in the online edition of Two Row Times. I have by my side the newspaper hard copy article that I picked up at Zehrs in Caledonia last Thursday. It includes a picture of Rick Hill holding up the "Claus belt" while in "Native costume" standing at a podium. The rest of page 16 is devoted to "Part 2 of out 4 part series on Haudenosaunee diversity". Guess I need to grab a few more hard copies. Did Rick "overstep his bounds" or something of that nature, and the online version was pulled? Or perhaps this is simply a error of some nature that will be corrected before Part 3 appears in both formats. Glad I am a local and have not been relying entirely on the electronic press for my news.Administrationhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05281509400158726212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7461637042198814103.post-31183579733753143212015-05-05T11:22:56.237-04:002015-05-05T11:22:56.237-04:00DeYo: thank you for your analysis of these Two Row...DeYo: thank you for your analysis of these Two Row Times (TRT) April 29, 2015 articles. Here, I will compare "In memory of Misty Upham," by "Contributor," to "What makes a 'real' Haudenosaunee?" by Rick Hill.

FYI: I could not find Hill's article on TRT's site. Did not have any trouble finding the article he wrote for the April 22, 2015 TRT, which is entitled "Haudenosauneee Diversity - Part One," (His April 29 article is part two of what is supposed to be a four-part series.) However, there is no link from part one to part two, nor does part two appear to be available in any other way on the TRT site.

Found Hill's article by Googling the author and title. There were only two entries: a link to your post, and to the article on page 16 of TRT in a "digital publishing platform" called issuu.

1. Regarding "In memory of Misty Upham": I think her situation is much more complex than what is revealed in this article. I suggest comparing it to Rick Anderson's "The Painful Life and Mysterious Death of Misty Upham," Seattle Weekly News, December 9, 2014. Anderson's 10-page piece includes about 11 quotations from Upham's web journal (used with her famly's permission). Upham's father, Charles Upham, is also quoted numerous times. The conclusion I took away after reading it is that Upham felt betrayed by some people in both the aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities.

As I said in my comment on your "'Walk for Change'. . ." October 9, 2014 post, I have witnessed aboriginal women being exploited, so I know it happens. But Upham's case is multi-faceted. Again, I recommend reading Anderson's article for further information.

2. Regarding "What makes a 'real' Haudenosaunee?": as you say, Hill presents "rational and sensible" arguments. He wisely notes that "[d]iversity and multiculturalism are a two way street." He acknowledge that repeated betrayals have made aboriginals distrustful, but then asks "do we want to stay there?" Very good question.counterpoisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13924091255218004722noreply@blogger.com
